      • Southeast Asia's Ring of Fire

Ways of knowing in the past and present

        broken image

        Overview

        Photo: Lithograph of Krakatoa, 1888.

Used as cover of book Syair Lampung Karam, (NUS Press, 2013), an English translation of the only known indigenous eyewitness account of the eruption.

How are volcanoes historical actors? What are the ways in which we perceive their agency? This research project aims to unpack the various ways in which we have historically constructed Southeast Asia's Ring of Fire and the implication of these knowledge constructions not only on how we understand the past but also assess our future.

Very much ongoing - readings, source discussions and relevant contemporary news will be forthcoming
